The guys at Winkler are always so friendly and knowledgeable. They explained to me that I didn’t need to return every 3000 miles for an oil change, and that my dealer was gouging me! So nice to have a service center so close to my work, too. Love the oil change promotions!!

Thank you Cara for your wonderful review. While many shops and dealers out there still advocate a 3000-mile oil change, we have decided instead to rely on science and data to make our decision to establish our oil change intervals at 5000 miles for conventional oil and 7500 miles for synthetic. The reason behind our decision is two-fold: advance in oil technology, and the environment. Today's oils are much more resilient than they were 10 years ago, with some oil manufacturers claiming 10,000 miles between oil changes. Some car manufacturers have even started to recommend 10,000 mile oil changes. But there is a very improtant caveat to keep in mind: these claims are based on tests conducted on engines running in optimal conditions. Unfortunately, driving conditions in the Washington DC ara are rarely optimal - stop-&-go traffic is more the norm, and these conditions mean that engines usually run hotter than optimal, because the cooling system, which does require air flow through the radiator, is not occuring as designed most of the time. This extra heat degrades the additives added to oils to protect engines from wear and tear. Another degrading factor for oils is humidity in the air, which over time will contribute to oil degradation. We have replaced in the last few years many engines on newer cars whose manufacturer claimed the larger mileage intervals between oil changes. Clearly the jury is still out on this one. So we dont advocate going as high as 7500 miles on conventional and 10000 on synthetic as oil and car manufacturers would lead you to believe (read the fine print...). Another reason why I belive the oil change intervals need to be raised from the old 3000 and 5000 standards is because of the environmental strain it causes. An average driver in the US drives about 12000 miles/ year. At 3000 miles oil change interval, you need 4 oil changes. At 5000 miles oil change interval, you need 2. Now it may not seem much, but think on a larger scale: each time, on average 5 new quarts of oil are needed for an oil change. Now multiply that by the millions of cars out there. Indeed going from 4 to 2 means a lot of new oil can stay in the ground a little longer, which mother nature would thank us for! We found that a safe interval would be 5000 miles for conventional oils and 7500 miles for synthetic oils. Thanks again for choosing us to service your vehicle. Sincerely, Karim.

Great people to work with now under new ownership. They are working hard to earn your business, hard to find an honest mechanic, Winkler's should be at the top of your list for your complex auto repairs.

Thank you so much for your glowing endorsement. IT means a lot to the entire team here! See you on your next service! Sincerely, Karim

They poured oil all over the engine during an oil change, now my car stinks of burnt oil. As customers we shouldn't have to get oil on hands cleaning up their mess. It's like a waitress handing you a plate and telling you the food is in the kitchen and make sure you clean up afterwards. Then pay me on your way out. I'm glad I didn't have them do my brakes.

Michael, I am very sorry to read that. I know I had commented on another similar review you had placed for your same visit, which you took down since. So I will re-iterate what I had written. Clearly we did not conduct the oil change on your car as we would normally do. Although we have a very clear procedure to follow, including communications with the front office to ensure incidents as such are known before you pick up your vehicle, this was a case where there was a communication breakdown. Since then, we've used your unfortunate experience to train further in our shop, especially on the importance of ensuring the lines of communications that are called-for in our procedures are always applied. I know I have offered you a complimentary full engine cleaning for your troubles, and I had hope you would give me a chance to do right my you. Again, my sincerest apologies and hope we could regain your trust somehow. Sincerely, Karim

Winkler is run by professionals who separate their consultation service from their repair service. They have enough confidence in their business model & delivery of excellence, they can afford to give you advice and let you walk away and take the repair to a competitor. That's how it feels to me when you interact with them at the counter. There is no pressure to do anything today or to have it done by them (because they have your vehicle in the shop and up on the lift). There is never any pressure...which alone is sufficient to recommend their service. At every routine oil-change, my dealership's "service advisers" always push me to do more repair & maintenance services, everything is almost always necessary. It's like unless I spend a good $500 to $1k each time, I can't leave in peace. I suspect they are either financially incentivized like commissioned salesmen or have a quota to meet. It's never like that at Winkler. They do the same diagnostics & inspection (with digital photos sent to your phone), list the items needing immediate attention for safety and others that warrant attention in the near future, and go over them with you but respect that you are an intelligent human being capable of making R&M decision based on the info & expert advice they provide and your circumstances, whether finance, schedule or tolerance for risk. With a free loaner (without legal paper work to indemnify them from every possible risk), Winkler has a business model that is customer-centric and professional ethics that is above reproach, they are such a fresh air in the auto-mechanic space. I have lived in the area since 1990 and finding a trust-worthy competent mechanic has always a real challenge until I chanced upon Winkler this year. Just try it yourself for a <$30 oil change & check-up, you will thank me for my recommendation.

Wow Tony!! I must say that you have perfectly summarized what we stand for. As you know, I used to be on the other side of the counter as a customer of automotive services. Since I took ownership 3 years ago, being able to say that "I know firsthand what it's like to be in your shoes" actually has teeth. Our goal is not only to make the service experience enjoyable and convenient, it is also to be the most relevant one you can have. As you have seen, we do this by leveraging technology at both the front and back of the shop, to provide you with the transparency that you have come to appreciate. And because we embrace technology, we are also able to provide all high-tech services today's cars require. Thank you again, Tony. It sincerely warms our heart to see that you get what we are trying to achieve - a uniquely great automotive service experience. Very sincerely, Karim

Karim, Jin, and the rest of the staff at Winkler did a phenomenal job of taking care of my truck and myself. I had to have some exhaust work done and not only did do a great job with that, they also took care of my front brakes that were wearing pretty thin. They took the time to make sure everything looked good and sounded good. They stayed in communication with me throughout the process and I would highly recommend their shop and services to anyone looking for a reputable garage that does top notch work.

Thank you Scott! We'll see you soon!
